February is way too short

Last day of February was a good one!! Four other girls and I (two from the family house and two I knew from the other house) went rafting about an hour out of Cusco and it was so fun. Actually met two girls from Winnipeg who were doing it too! We did a two hour raft in rapids class 3-5, so like there were some pretty big guys. A couple people bailed HAHA but I am glad to say I did not. However I still got absolutely soaked. We were then served lunch when returned to like 'base camp' haha I guess you could say. Such a good lunch and it was a beautiful day out too. We were lucky! Needless to say it was a complete gong show and I am sore from paddling on one side. The protests on wednesday ended up being pretty intense but very controlled. Basically it was a mountain community that stopped all transportation into Cusco and then also the main street in Cusco. They wanted to bring to everyone's attention the fact that they don't get enough support from the government. It was completely fine they stayed where they were supposed to stay and everything and it was like pre planned... there is another one on monday too apparently haha something to do with the fact that trains will not run.  So some unlucky travellers might get stuck at Machu Picchu for an extra day.. SHOOT.
At the project we are trying to do more constructive stuff with the kids, like the other day everyone's drawing had to incorporate their hand in some way... so some kids made their hand into animals or just drew them normal, etc. and we also played a little bit of american football on friday too. Well by 'played' I mean passed around and played duck duck goose with the little guys. They are just so funny. One mini tried to steal my gum out of my mouth the other day.
Tomoorrow is some other kind of carnavale with dancing and music and outfits and such so I am meeting a girl from my project and this Norwegian girl I met last night for breakfast and then we are going to check it out. AND we are going to attempt to go to the soccer game tomorrow afternoon! It is a big one, Cusco vs Lima, a big rivalry. I am pretty excited about that. Who knows if we'll get tickets though its supposed to be pretty big!!

  1. Ames - I'm so glad that yu've had a good few weeks, so far. It sounds like it is action-packed. Maybe one of the reasons the people are so happy is that they are always celebrating something. It would be great if you could get tickets for the soccer! When do you think you might do Macchu Picchu? Did you find out about us sending donations for the project? We can get it rounded up pretty quickly.

  2. Wow--all thesepeople you are meeting--what a gift!!
Hope you took pics of the rafting area and the rest of your day. Impossible to shoot the rafting . I know, but the place is what I meant.
You are right , it seems likeyou have been gone for ages-- and picking up another languagein this short space of time, seems like a huge thing to do.

Will you continue when you get home?
I know there are llamas and sheep there ---what other farm animals are there?

Ames---Is there anything I can do to donate in some way? Do you need a few supplies that I could send , or could I put the money in your account and you could go from there? Would love to do something. Love you Min

  3. Hi Amy: Well we've finally caught up with you and your blog. We have loved reading about your many experiences so far - you are a terrific writer. What a great bunch of memories you are making!
Hope you got to see the soccer game.
I'll repeat what your Mom & Min have said - is there any way to get a few supplies (for you or the kids) to you?
Take care Love Uncle Len & Auntie Jo

  4. Just watched Brian Keating on the Breakfast show---he came back this last weekend from Peru, and showed some of the incredible pics of the mountains, vicunas, alpacas, llamas and guinea pigs( which I understand run around underfoot in the homes where they are raised for eating!!!) Amy ---go round up supper will you!!!
He also showed some of his group climbing to Machu Pichu , and that ancient city---Which having been around for hundreds of years, was only discovered in 1911!!!
There is a bird up ther e called "the cock of the rock" bright orange, and the size of a pidgeon, except its beak is almost non existent. It was a really interesting interview made only moreso because you are there. Sure hope you got the game.----AAre the fans as boisterous and "song-singing" as in Europe?
Looking forward to the next entry- Min

  5. I know you mentioned the G pigs before, but I had no idea that the families raise them right there in their kitchens. At least a dozen at a time!! Min
